The well and the old farm's foundation walls were laid up with some huge glacial erratics which originally littered the fields, here abouts. Some of these boulders must have required a dozen or so of our forbears to wrestle them into place.
In the case of smaller wells it would often have been children who dug the wells. How bears or children or anyone at all could stone up the sides of the well from the top down, or whether they actually risked digging the whole thing before they lined it, I do not know. Maybe in this case, they dug a larger hole, laid up the stone from the outside, and then back filled it. |
